Our approach to academic instruction emphasizes a less-is-more philosophy, focusing on key concepts and big ideas. For early learners, lessons are kept short and include hands-on activities and plenty of movement throughout the day, making it both fun and healthy, especially for active young boys. Our Trinity Church campus offers a large, new playground and ample green space.
Our educational philosophy is influenced by Charlotte Mason, Waldorf, and Montessori methods, which have shaped my 20 years of homeschooling and the foundation of Compass Prep since its inception in 2005. This natural and organic approach to teaching and learning has proven effective over the years.
For elementary students (approximately 5-10 years old), we emphasize fundamental skill-building in reading and math. Other subjects, such as science, history, and foreign languages, are approached through exploration rather than rote memorization for tests.
Older students delve deeper into subjects like science, history, geography, and grammar, learning the language of each discipline while avoiding the counterproductive binge-and-regurgitate method. We believe that projects across all subjects are superior tools for learning and assessing student understanding.
